Vidal M. Villarreal, age 81, went to be with Our Lord on Feb. 16, 2019. He was born to Victor and Hilaria Morales Villarreal on Oct. 26, 1937. He went to school in Sarita, TX, and later served with the U. S. Army. Vidal returned home and started working with Riviera Telephone Company at ground level with a shovel and moved up the ranks to hold the position of Field Supervisor with a pencil with the phone company and retired after 31 years of service.
Bill Colston Jr. said Vidal came to work with RTC in 1968 and described him as "the big brother I never had." Also, Vidal was RISD's number one fan in every sport, both boys and girls and at every level. For this and the many other things Vidal has done for the community, it was announced last year that the new RISD sports complex will be named in his honor.
Vidal was kind, generous, forgiving, witty, and ready for a good joke, the cornier the better. He also went out of his way to help, guide and raise many generations of kids in his family and community. Despite never having kids of his own, to say he was like a father to many dozens or even one hundred kids, you wouldn't be far from the truth.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Tircio and brother Baldemar. He is survived by his 2 sisters, Ofelia Diaz, and Elvia Sloan; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, from 5 pm to 9 pm with a rosary to be recited at 7 pm that same evening at Turcotte Piper Mortuary. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Riviera, TX. Interment to follow at Riviera Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Shriners Hospital, St. Jude, or any other cancer hospital of your choice. As a cancer survivor, and for his love of children, please consider a donation in behalf of the memory of Vidal M. Villarreal.
