Sue Johnston Miller, an active member of the Kingsville-Kleberg County community completed her last big event here on earth, on Friday morning December 4, 2015, surrounded by her family.
Sue was born on May 9, 1941 in Borger, Texas to Ace and Edna Johnston. In 1953, her family moved from the dry Texas Pan-handle to the bayou country of Franklin, Louisiana. Sue transferred to Kingsville with Bell Telephone. She met Joe in the spring of 1961 and they were married on October 27, 1961. After having 4 children in the first few years of marriage, the Miller family moved to Ricardo in 1973.
As an active member of the Kingsville and area communities, she was chairman in several organizations such as: Woman's Club of Kingsville's FLAIR Department and AWARE Department, South Texas District TFWC, Friends of the Robert J. Kleberg Public Library, Kingsville Action Network, Court Appointed Special Advocates(CASA), El S.O.L(Save Our Landscape), La Posada Christmas tree forest and Parade of lights, Texas Extension Homemakers Association , Kleberg Republican Women, HM King FFA Booster's Club, Boys and Girls Club of Kingsville, and Ricardo PTO.
In addition to these clubs, she played a key role in the success of the FLAIR Department's short story and poetry contest, Books for Babies, D.E.A.R(Drop Everything and Read), Bone China Tea-benefitting the OI Foundation, Flato Opera House project, Seller's Market, Downtown Merchants' Association, MHMR, FOCUS-Teens in Leadership, JoshFest, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Brush Country Girl's Softball league.
Doing for others and her community was her passion, and for this she received several awards such as: Outstanding Clubwoman, South Central Jennie award, Citizen of the Year, Otis West lifetime achievement award, TEHA Community Service award, TEHA Woman of the Year award, Honorary Chapter Farmer Degree and Outstanding Service to FFA, Sue was once named as one of the "Top Ten News Makers" by the Kingsville Record.
Sue has been a member of the Kingsville Church of Christ for more than 54 years. She served at various times as: the coordinator of the Elementary education department, Vacation Bible School coordinator, past Director of the Church bus ministry, coordinator of Children's Bible hour program, Ladies Bible class teacher, and coordinator of the Ladies Friendship circle. Sue also served in years past on the volunteer staff of Bandina Christian Youth camp in Bandera.
Sue is survived by her husband of 54 years, Joe Miller of Kingsville, her daughter, Deborah (Pat) Watkins of Pflugerville, sons, John Dale (Danielle) Miller, Ben (Vonda) Miller and daughter, Sarah (Kevin) Fehrenbacher, all of Kingsville. Sue is also survived by her siblings, Harry (Nancy) Johnston, Jean King, Kay (Ed) Denny, and Bonnie Koger, all of Louisiana, Jessie (Don) Roper of North Carolina, and Tom (Caroline) Johnston of Katy. Sue is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 10 ½ great-grandchildren.
A memorial/celebration service will be held on Saturday, December 12th at 10:00 a.m. at the Kingsville Church of Christ building located at 11th and Huisache streets. Those that knew Sue best will know that rather than give flowers, she would prefer that they give of themselves to the charity or volunteer service group of their choice and be a positive influence in the life of a child.
Services are entrusted to Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, 205 General Cavazos Blvd., Kingsville, Texas.
