Sonja Gamez Martinez

Sonja Gamez Martinez passed away peacefully on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. Sonja’s life was a testament to love, resilience, and devotion to her family.

Her love and devotion extended beyond her personal life into her professional career, where she dedicated over 40 years of service alongside Sam Fugate at the Law Offices of Sam R. Fugate. She took immense pride in her work, leaving an enduring legacy of commitment and excellence to all she encountered that will not be forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her father, Juan Luis Gamez Jr.; her beloved husband, Ruben Martinez; her daughter, Erika Elyse Martinez; her grandson, Ace Martinez; and her granddaughter, Penelope Martinez. 

Sonja is survived by her loving children, Julie Ann Martinez (Joanna) and Ruben Martinez Jr. (Estrella). She was a proud grandmother to Brianna Cyrese Martinez, Emma Rae Martinez, and Leila Rain Martinez, and great-granddaughter, Violet Jade Galvan. She is also survived by her mother, Alicia Gamez, and three devoted sisters: Monica Gamez, Sylvia Kubiak (Robert), and Cindy Gamez (Dilan). Sonja’s extended family includes numerous nieces and nephews who cherished her deeply. 

A holy rosary will be recited in Sonja's honor at 9:30 am on Tuesday December 31, 2024, followed by a mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church at 10 am. A rite of committal and internment will follow at Chamberlain Cemetery. 

 The family is deeply grateful to the compassionate staff at Christus Spohn Kleberg Hospital and University Hospital in San Antonio, TX for their exceptional care during Sonja’s final days. The family also extends heartfelt gratitude to Hector Martinez for his unwavering devotion, ensuring Sonja was surrounded by love, dignity, and comfort.

Sonja will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all. Her legacy of love, strength, and faith will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
