Shirley Jones

Shirley Day Jones, 77, long time resident of Kingsville, TX died July 13, 2013 after a short illness in Seguin, TX.
Shirley was born September 02, 1935 in Alice, TX to Albert and Edna Day. She graduated from Odem High School before enrolling at Texas College of Arts and Industries in Kingsville. Upon earning her B.B.A. in August 1956, Shirley remained at her alma mater, accepting the position of Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. She would hold this position until retirement, 30 years later. Throughout her life, she remained a dedicated supporter of Texas AM University Kingsville.
She married Ray E. Jones on October 13, 1956, and remained happily married until Rays death, 43 years later.
Shirley was a very talented quilter. She won numerous awards and ribbons over the years for her beautiful quilts, some of which being accepted for show at the International Quilt Show in Houston, Tx.
She loved all things Texas, especially its history, and was an avid reader of books on the subject. She also loved to travel, taking many wonderful trips with family and friends to places all over the world.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Survivors include a sisterinlaw, Luann Jerry Bennett of Austin, a nephew, Mark Stephens Gay Bennett of Austin, a niece, Dianne Roy Shugart of Austin, and a greatnephew, Brett Bennett Shugart of Austin.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at TurcottePiper Mortuary. Graveside service was held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Chamberlain Cemetery with Rev. Chuck Miller officiating.
