Roy Cantu

Roy Cantu, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community servant, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2025, in Riviera, Texas. He was born on December 3, 1945, in Kingsville, Texas, to Guadalupe and Esperanza Cantu. His life was marked by unwavering commitment to his family, his career, and his community, demonstrating qualities that many admired and respected throughout his journey.

Roy graduated from Kaufer High School in 1964, a foundation that led him to pursue a career with the Celanese Bishop Plant, where he dedicated over 33 years before retiring. During his time there, he exemplified hard work and integrity, earning the respect of his colleagues and peers.

After graduation, Roy proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968, where he operated as an airborne interpreter during the Cold War, focusing on Cuban missions. His dedication to serving his country further exemplified his character and commitment to duty.

A strong proponent of education and local governance, Roy served on the Riviera School Board for 18 years and was a Kleberg County Commissioner for Precinct 3 for 16 years. His influence extended far beyond these roles as he participated in numerous boards and committees aimed at enhancing the community's quality of life. He was a board member of the Frederick Douglas Center, the Brookshire Foundation, and Communities in School Living Legend Committee. His commitment to education and welfare was also evident in his role on the Kleberg County Appraisal District Board.

Roy's heart for service was vividly illustrated through nearly 50 years as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician with the Kleberg County Fire Department and EMS. As a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3389, he cultivated a spirit of fellowship and charity.

Beyond his professional and civic commitments, Roy was an active member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Riviera and Sarita, Texas. His love for his community was matched only by his love for his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Hilda Naranjo Cantu, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage; his three children, Anna Lisa Garcia (Edward), Roy Cantu Jr (Sylvia), and Joseph David Cantu; his grandchildren, Virginia Alyss, Arianna Nicole, Dante Lorenzo (Amber), and Damian Christopher (Zenobia Rogers); his great-grandchildren, Blaise Raiden and Eloise Montgomery Cantu; his siblings Robert Cantu (Brenda), Raul Cantu (Renee), Rebecca Gutierrez, Rosalinda Farek (George); his nieces and nephews Kayce Smith (Allan), Heston Cantu (Heather), Katherine Hamilton (Joseph), and Joshua Dean Williams; and several grand nieces and nephews.

Roy was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Guadalupe Cantu and Esperanza Cantu, whose teachings and love guided him throughout his life.

His legacy of service, care, and dedication will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
