Roberto & Hermidia Trevino

Roberto Trevino, devoted husband and beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Monday, March 29, 2021.

Hermidia (Mamie) Trevino, devoted wife and beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother joined Roberto in heaven on Monday, April 5, 2021.

Roberto was born on September 5, 1931 to Bruno and Nicasia Trevino. After graduating from Falfurrias High School, he joined the U.S. Air Force. Roberto played football and baseball while in the Air Force and traveled to bases around the world competing against other service members. These were some of his fondest memories and inspired his love of travel.

After the military, Roberto attended Texas A&I University where he played football and was a member of the 1959 Javelina championship football team. As he told it, he ”... was 5’10” tall and weighed 130 lbs. They would list me as 160 lbs on the football programs”. To be competitive required determination, resiliency, and an unfailing dedication to exercise and fitness, which continued throughout Roberto’s lifetime. It was during this time at Texas A&I that Roberto met and fell in love with Mamie.

Mamie was born on April 8, 1933 to Alberto and Manuelita Garcia. After graduating at age 16 from Kingsville High School, Mamie attended Baptist Nursing School in San Antonio and became a registered nurse. One of her early jobs was as an emergency room nurse at Kleberg County hospital before becoming a school nurse.

Mamie continued her education at Texas A&I University (eventually earning a Bachelor’s and two Master’s degrees) and it was there that she met Roberto, the love of her life. When recounting their love story, Mamie would laugh and say that their first meeting resulted from a bet with a cousin (which she won) - and the rest is history. This was typical of Mamie. Her infectious laugh and sense of humor made her the life of many parties. A big laugh from a little package.

Roberto and Mamie were lifelong educators and believed strongly in education. Their grandchildren will attest that even after Mamie’s condition worsened and she no longer remembered their names, she still asked about their schooling.

Roberto and Mamie lived a life of service and spent their lives as hardworking, dedicated, faithful and loving people. They were excellent role models for numerous young people. Following their retirement from Kingsville ISD, it was a common occurrence for former students to approach Roberto, Mamie or their children, not only in greeting but in gratitude for the encouragement, support, or guidance they received from Roberto and Mamie. This is a testament to the lives they led.

The couple had a long-standing relationship with God and felt very blessed with their faith. They were lifelong members of St. Martin’s Parish where Roberto was a 30+ year member of the choir and Mamie was a Eucharistic minister.

Roberto and Mamie were married for over 60 years and were grateful to have lived a long and fulfilling life that allowed them to travel together around the world. In Roberto’s words: “First and foremost - I would like to thank God for an enjoyable, fulfilling life.”

This loving, caring and wonderful couple will be greatly missed by their children Bobby (Cindy), Emmy (Patrick), and J.E. (Martha); grandchildren Robert Michael, Estevan (Megan), Michaela (Clint), Maya, Benjamin, Timothy, and Marcello; and great-grandchildren Isabella and Violetta.

They will also be missed by Roberto’s surviving sister Aida Trevino and Mamie’s surviving siblings Herminia Garcia and Robert Garcia, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
