Robbie Lee Hughes was born on December 27, 1923 to Leola Watson Hughes and E. M. Hughes in Thrall, Texas. Robbie was the third child born to this union. She attended school in Taylor, Texas. She graduated from Blackshear High School under the principalship of Professor Price.
Robbie met the love of her life Ernest Houston in Taylor, Texas while she was still in high school. They soon married after graduating high school. To this union four children were born. They relocated to Kingsville, Texas in 1946, due to employment opportunities with Missouri Pacific Railroad. After moving to Kingsville the family united with the King Star Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend R. R. Reese. Robbie was an active member of the church. She served in several capacities of the church. She was president of the Junior Mission. She also belonged to a singing group that participated in church programs. Robbie had the honor of being the first chairperson for Women's Day at the King Star Baptist Church.
Mrs. Robbie's home was always a warm, loving, and safe place for all the children in the community. She was affectionately known by all the children as "Grandmother". At Grandmother's house there was always something sweet to eat. Grandmother never ever had a cross word with anyone.
She was preceded in death by both parents Leola and E. M. Hughes, her husband Ernest Houston, daughter Linda Leola, two granddaughters Quinette Carson, and Keenah Carson.
She leaves to cherish her legacy two daughters Evelyn Corrinne Houston of Oakland, California, Mary Jo Carson of Kingsville, Texas, Woodrow (Amelia) of Temple Hill, Maryland; two granddaughters Crystal (Ricky) Hall, Carla Cornell; two great granddaughters Victoria (Antoine) Crump, Ashely (William) Mcdonough, six great grandsons Antwon Carson, Justin Shelton, Jacobe Carson, Stephen Cunningham, Michael A. Cornell, Brian Cornell, four great great grandchildren Kei'Ariyeon, Ke'Ansai, Emanuel, Egypt, a host of relatives, friends, and church family to cherish her memory
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at King Star Baptist Church, with the funeral service to begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Chamberlain Cemetery.
Services are entrusted to Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, 205 General Cavazos Blvd. Kingsville, Texas.
