Richard H. Nordeen (Dick), Uncle Dick, Grandpa, Dad passed on Sunday, September 6, 2015 surrounded by family and loved ones. He peacefully and quietly slipped the pains and the bonds of this life to be received into the loving arms of Jesus and entered eternal praise and glory. He was residing with his son in Kingsville, Texas but was a longtime resident of Middlefield, Ohio.
He is survived by two sons, Donald L. Nordeen (Hostetler) and Darrell H. Nordeen (Rebecca); five grandchildren, Vanessa Nordeen Speckman (Shawn) of Kingsville, Texas, Ryan C. Nordeen (Tiffiny) of Olathe, Kansas, Becca R. Nordeen of New York City, Eric E. Hostetler of Temple Terrace, Florida and Angela Riley (John) of Plainfield, Illinois; four great-grandchildren, , Elizah Nordeen-Speckman, Kaleb Speckman, Parker Nordeen and Lily Nordeen. Also left are many nephews, nieces, cousins and close friends.
He was preceded by his wife of 54 years, Mabel Fobes Nordeen; his parents, Harry and Anna Nordeen; and a brother, Robert Nordeen of Eagleville, Ohio.
Richard grew up in Eagleville, Ohio and attended Austinburg Academy. Dick was proud to attend his 75th HS Reunion in July 2014. He was an avid baseball player and fan. After high school, he worked many farm related jobs and also sailed on the Great Lakes as a deck hand and wheelsman. He was drafted and served honorably in the US Army (September 2, 1942 - June 18, 1946) in the European campaign. He ended his service in Berlin, Germany and returned to Ohio and sailing.
He married Mable Doris Fobes Hostetler on March 12, 1947 and resided in Middlefield, Ohio. He worked for Johnson Rubber Company for 38 years having never been late for work. Dick completed his career in the sales and customer contact areas. He typically walked to work, arriving early and was home soon after five p.m. You could almost set a watch by his regularity to work and home.
He enjoyed many family activities from bowling, hunting, fishing, clambakes, gardening, antique collecting, tinkering, and maintaining his home. Dick was quite crafty and able to tackle many problems with unique (if not often simple) solutions.
Dick shot the film and video for the Cardinal Huskies for 23 years from 1960 to 1983. He built and then climbed the lighting pole to the film platform every week to help Paul Verno and the Huskies improve. He continued to follow the Huskies until his passing. Always interested in Cardinal sports, he closely followed the track career of his son Don who was the Ohio State Champion in the 880 yard run in 1962.
Richard was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Burton, the First Methodist Church of Middlefield, and Retama Park Baptist in Kingsville, Texas.
He spent the last few years of his life in Kingsville where he enjoyed the Western Spirit, King Ranch, HALO-Flight, and the Corpus Christi HOOKS baseball games.
Richard was a devoted husband to Mabel, wonderful example and father, friend, employee, very giving and always ready to talk with anyone. A Christian man with integrity, character and love. We never saw him lose his temper or control. He loved and was loved. Richard will be greatly missed.
