Paulino Q. "Polin" Silguero was called home on July 20, 2018 at the age of 100. He was born on June 30, 1918 to Narciso and Juanita (Quintanilla) Silguero at Laureles-King Ranch, Tx. In 1928, at the age of 10, he started learning the ways of the vaquero in Laureles, by hiding his books under the school staircase and making his way to the "corrales" to help the Kineños work cattle. It was there in Laureles that he would meet the love of his life, Mercedes, and by May 13, 1938 they were married. Paulino continued as a Kineño until 1944, when he moved for a short time to work for Thomas East, Sr. and Alice Kleberg East at their South Texas ranch San Antonio Viejo. In 1945 Paulino returned to the King Ranch, until 1952 when he began working for Thomas East, Jr. at Los Muertos Ranch just outside of Bruni, Tx. In 1957 Paulino made his way back to San Antonio Viejo and worked under Roberto East until 1993 and retired for a short few months. It wasn't long before he was "back in the saddle" and began working for Mike East at Mifflin Camp in Kenedy County until he fully retired in 2006 at the age of 88. Paulino spent 78 years as a working cowboy; 57 of those years loyal to the East family. After retirement, Paulino was named the 2006 Grand Marshall of the 2nd Annual Vaquero Festival in Hebbronville, Texas. He was a hard worker who provided for his family, a dedicated vaquero, a man of vision with many stories to tell, and most importantly he was a hero to his legacy of 170 descendants.
