Mildred Brown

Mildred Kelly Brown, age 98, a former longtime resident of Bishop, Baytown, Bandera, and Sugar Land, Texas, died peacefully in her sleep Thursday, December 22, 2016, in Richardson, Texas. She was born in August of 1918 in Bishop, Texas to John Sanford Kelly and Ida Harlan Kelly. She married Harold Bannan Brown, also of Bishop, October 17, 1948, at the home of her parents. Mildred and Harold met in the second grade. After graduating from Bishop High School, Mrs. Brown attended A&I College, Kingsville, Texas, where she graduated with a BBA degree in business and a minor in English. She taught school 21 years, including Primera High School in Harlingen and Sinton High School in Sinton prior to her marriage; then later teaching elementary school in Baytown after their daughters were born. From 1944 to 1948 she served as Assistant County Superintendent of Nueces County in Corpus Christi. Mr. D. D. Snow was County School Superintendent at that time.

In 1978 she retired from teaching, and her husband, Harold, retired from Tenneco Oil Company. They moved from Baytown to Bandera. Together they traveled, gardened, and just enjoyed the beautiful Texas hill country. Mrs. Brown was very active in the Bandera County Republican Party and the Bandera County Extension Homemakers Club.

At the age of 13 she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior, joining the First Baptist Church in Bishop. Later, as she and her husband moved, they held membership at Memorial Baptist Church in Baytown, First Baptist Church of Bandera, and lastly Sugar Land Baptist Church.

Mildred was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family was very special to her. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; her four brothers, Harlan Kelly, Joe Kelly, Levi Kelly, and Tom Kelly; and her sister, Louise Setliff.

She is survived by their three daughters and son-in-laws, Betty and Jim Oursler of Rockwall, Claudia and Casey Martin of Dallas, and Martha and Brian Baer of Sugar Land; three grandchildren, Matthew Baer of San Antonio, Margaret Baer of Austin, and Nathan Martin of Dallas; many nieces and nephews.
