R.L. Mike Hunter, age 80, a resident of Kingsville, Texas passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at his residence. He was born August 31, 1935 in Brownsville, Texas to Lloyd Hunter and Genevieve Becker Hunter. Michael was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Percy A. Hunter. In Michael's early years, he attended grade school and high school in Kingsville. He received his Bachelors and Masters Degree of Science from Texas A&I University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked as a chemist for various petro-chemical companies. He was the area director for the U.S. Dept. of Labor - OSHA. Michael was a faithful member of St. Gertrude Catholic Church where he served as greeter and usher and also was a member of the finance committee. He was a past Grand Knight and lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3389. Michael was a past board president of Chamberlain Cemetery and was also a past board member of TAMUK Javelina Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing at Baffin Bay and very much enjoyed the company of his children and grandchildren. He hosted his grandchildren every summer for what he liked to call "Young Republican Camp."
He is survived by his wife of 54 years of marriage, Mary Jo Hunter of Kingsville; two daughters, Margaret LaHue and husband Neal of Buda, Texas and Rachel Unterbrink and husband Byron of Corpus Christi, Texas; one son, Lloyd Hunter and wife Jena of Odem, Texas; one brother, Philip Hunter and wife Kathy of Angleton, Texas; sister-in-law, Eve Hunter of Windom, Texas; and nine grandchildren, Morgan, Sarita and Zach Hunter, Claire, Anais and Michael LaHue and Caroline, Lauren and Riley Unterbrink.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 19, 2016 at the Turcotte-Piper Mortuary Chapel. Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 19, 2016 at the Turcotte-Piper Mortuary Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 2016 at St. Gertrude Catholic Church with Fr. James Stembler as celebrant. Burial will follow in Kingsville at Chamberlain Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Gertrude Catholic School, Chamberlain Cemetery or a charity of one's choice.
Services are entrusted to Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, 205 General Cavazos Blvd., Kingsville, Texas.
