Mary Nix

Mary Lou Nix, age 91, from Kingsville, Texas died on December 27,2020 at her home surrounded by her family and caregivers.

Mary Lou was born in Kingsville to Lela and Cecil Garrison on October 1, 1929. She attended school in Kingsville and graduated valedictorian of her class at H.M. King High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Harrel D. Nix, and they recently celebrated seventy-three years of marriage. The couple moved to Hinesville, Georgia when Harrel entered the service during the Korean War. Their first child, Jean Marie, was born in Georgia. Mary Lou and Harrel also lived in Norfolk, Virginia before returning to Kingsville to settle into their permanent home. Their son Douglas was born in Kingsville.

Mary Lou was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where she taught both children and adults over a span of many years. As a long-standing member of the Woman’s club of Kingsville, she participated in various programs and activities, enjoying the fellowship of her many friends in that organization. Mary Lou volunteered tirelessly for mental health and rehabilitation, working to improve programs for those in need and foster awareness and support in her community.

Mary Lou and Harrel loved to travel and had adventures all over the world. They have many precious memories of their time together on trips to the Mediterranean, Germany, France, and Spain. They visited Hawaii together several times. Other trips to the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, New Zealand and Australia were enjoyed through service awards from Harrel’s General Motors Chevrolet dealership.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband, Harrel D. Nix of Kingsville. She was preceded in death by her children, Jean Marie and Douglas, and her grandson Chance Brownlee. She is also survived by many loving members of her extended family.

So many caregivers came into the Nix home during the last few years, and the family is so very thankful for each and every one of them.

To honor Mary Lou’s memory, the family requests donations to be made to the First United Methodist Church of Kingsville or to a charity of choice.

Private family visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 2, 2021 with funeral service at 11a.m. at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow at Chamberlain Cemetery.
