Margaret Ann (Thurmon) Screws, age 98, went to be with the Lord on November 19, 2016. She was born at St Paul Hospital in Dallas, Texas to Ottie William Thurmon and Catherine Marie (Johnson) Thurmon. Margaret received her education at Catholic schools and nursing training at St. Paul Hospital where she was born. After graduating from nursing school, she and her friend Janie, moved to Kermit, Texas to work at the Robinson McClure Hospital where she met and later married George Dewey "Pete" Screws. Pete's job with Sun Oil Company is what brought the family to South Texas. Margaret was a school nurse in San Isidro, Texas and after moving to Premont, she worked at Brooks County Hospital. She enjoyed retirement by spending time traveling with family and friends to Germany, Italy, Hawaii and many other places. Margaret was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Premont and a member of St. Theresa's Women's Club. She was proud, but humble, of her work as a nurse, wife to Pete and mother of eight children. Premont was home for 48 years but after her 90th birthday, Mt. Carmel Home in Corpus Christi, Texas, became her new home. Family preceding her in death are her parents, step-father Jeffie Walker Dodd, husband Pete, son-in-law's Jim Shows and Mike Shigekawa. Her younger sister, Mary Frances Llorente, passed away hours after Margaret's death. "Gotta love God's plan for the sisters."
She is survived by eight children; Cathy Shows from Waxahachie, Texas, George (Brenda) Crews from Marble Falls, Texas, Patsy (Dick) Wuensche from Huntsville, Texas, David Screws from Stephenville, Texas, Becky Shigekawa from Spring Lake, North Carolina, Mary Ellen (Russell) Marks from Crystal Beach, Texas, Frances (Ken) Kuhn from Kingsville, Texas, and Jeff (Cheryl) Crews from Boerne, Texas; 19 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Mt. Carmel home for the wonderful care and support our mother received while in their care and to the staff at Kingsville Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Our loving thanks to God who blessed us with a wonderful mother who touched not only our lives, but the lives of many others through her service as a caring nurse and friend.
