Luella Margaret Hubert passed away peacefully at her home in Riviera, Texas on March 15, 2014 with family by her bedside.
She was born in Premont, Texas on June 1, 1920 and was raised by her grandparents, affectionately known as Mama and Papa Bowen. She graduated from Riviera High School as valedictorian of her class at the age of 15. Luella earned a scholarship to any university in Texas, but instead, chose to marry the love of her life, Earl Theodore Hubert. She had a love for sports, meeting Earl while playing baseball.
Carrying a bouquet of fresh water lilies gathered by her soon to be nephew, Dr. Pat Hubert, Luella married Earl on August 31, 1936 at Our Lady of Consolation Church in Vattmann, Texas.
In 1940 Luella had her first child, Dr. Earl Dickie Hubert, Jr. Nita, followed over the years by five other children, Donnie Sherry Hahn, Duane Bonita, Drew Cindy, Dewey Kathy, and Denise Dwain Ideus.
Luella stayed busy caring for her family, earning the nickname MeeMaw, while helping Earl build their family businesses. Their partnership lasted over 53 years in 1989 Luella suddenly lost Earl. With the help of her children, Luella kept their ranch and farming operations viable, making certain she was the boss while enjoying every minute. In the words of many who knew her, MeeMaw was considered an amazing woman.
In 2008, she lost her eldest son, Dickie. However, five children, 15 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren survive her.
Visitation will be held at the TurcottePiper Mortuary from noon to 5:30 p.m. on March 18, 2014 followed by a Rosary service at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church in Vattmann at 7:00 pm. The funeral mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. on March 19, followed by graveside services at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Cemetery.
