Jose Luz “Joe” Arevalo passed away peacefully on July 28, 2023, at the age of 89. He was born in Falfurrias, TX and raised in Bishop, TX. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1961. While stationed in Alaska in 1952, he survived a cable car fall of over a hundred feet that left him with permanent injuries. His most significant duty assignment was with the 812th SUPRON (SAC) during the Korean War where he earned the National Defense Service Medal.
After being honorably discharged, he lived and worked in Missouri before moving to Texas where he married and raised two children. He retired from Nueces County and dedicated his time to serving the community. He was a devout Catholic, volunteered at the local Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and America’s Last Patrol Ranch. He was well known for helping veterans & veterans’ families.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fidela Perez and Mauricio Arevalo, brothers Fidel, Mauricio, and Ruben Arevalo, daughter Elizabeth Pope, and sister Maria Golden.
Among those left to cherish his memory are his ex-wife, Graciela Arevalo; children, Ofelia Arevalo and Mauricio Arevalo; grandchildren, Andrew and Adriana Arevalo; brother, Jesse Arevalo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive condolences on Friday, August 4, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary; with a holy rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A funeral cortege will depart Turcotte-Piper Mortuary at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2023, to St. James Catholic Church, Bishop, TX, for a mass of christian burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. A Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at Santa Gertrudis Cemetery, Kingsville, TX.
