Harrel was born in Kingsville on October 26, 1926, to Lorenzo Dow and Lillie Nix.
He attended school in Kingsville and graduated from H.M. King high school. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Lou Garrison and celebrated 73 years of marriage until Mary Lou's death in 2020. They also lived in Norfolk, Virginia before returning to Kingsville to settle into their permanent home. Their son Douglas was born in Kingsville.
Harrel and Mary Lou were active members of the First United Methodist church in Kingsville. Harrel was also active in the Noon Lion's club for many years. He had multiple business interests in the area, owning May-Nix Chevrolet, developing real estate, and ranching. Harrel and Mary Lou loved to travel and enjoyed many trips around the globe through General Motors service awards.
Harrel is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Lou, his children Jean Marie and Douglas, and his grandson Chance Brownlee. He is survived by many loving members of his extended family. So many caregivers came into his home in the last few years, and the family is so very thankful for each and every one of them.
