Harold was born on a farm near Bishop, Texas on December 13, 1921 to Addie Lucille and Claude Francis Hickman. He joined his older brother, Cecil.
Harold attended Bishop schools where he participated in sports and graduated in 1939. He continued his education at Texas A & M graduating in 1943 as a distinguished student with a degree in Marketing and Finance. Also in 1943, Harold entered Infantry School in Fort Benning, GA graduating as a Commissioned 2nd LT. Then he spent about 6 months in Camp Wheeler, GA. The following year he was transferred to the Army Specialized Training Unit staff at Washington, PA. This was followed by duty on staff at the Virginia Military Institute and later at Valley Forge Military Academy. Harold retired from the Army in 1947 as a Captain.
While in Pennsylvania, Harold met the love of his life, Rose Gillespie who he married Jan. 9, 1947. Their beloved son, James Francis Hickman was born in Bishop on February 27, 1956.
After leaving the Army, Harold worked at the Southern Minerals Corporation and Houston Natural Gas (Enron) in addition to farming in the Concordia area for 40 years.
Harold and Rose made their first home together in Bishop in 1947 and then moved to the farm in 1955. In 1972, they moved into their home in Bishop where Harold lived until his passing.
Harold attended First Baptist Church in Bishop beginning in 1935. In 1966 Harold was asked to take a position as a "temporary" Sunday school teacher. He held this "temporary" position for 40 years when he finally retired to care for Rose.
Since 1987, Harold could be found almost daily at the local Dairy Queen and at Stripes drinking coffee and solving the world's problems with his long-time friends.
Harold was a loving and generous man who was devoted to his family. Harold was preceded in death by his son James Francis Hickman (1997), his wife of 60 ½ years Rose Hickman (2009) and his brother Cecil Hickman (1974).
