Encarnacion "Chonito" Silva, III, a man whose life was a vibrant tapestry interwoven with love, hard work, and joy, passed away on February 21, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on September 9, 1946, Chonito devoted his life to the art of ranching and family, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to know him.
From a tender age of 10, Chonito’s affinity for horses and the cowboy way of life became apparent as he began working alongside his father at the esteemed Laureles Division of King Ranch. This relationship not only nurtured his lifelong passion for ranching but also laid the groundwork for a remarkable career that spanned an impressive fifty years before he hung up his saddle and welcomed retirement. His legacy at King Ranch is defined not only by the labor of his hands but by the spirit he shared with his fellow coworkers – a spirit that resonated with camaraderie and respect. Chonito’s ability to connect with horses, built a legacy as a true cowboy, whose affection for the land and animals was matched only by his devotion to his family.
Chonito was not only a diligent worker but a devoted family man who cherished every moment spent surrounded by his loved ones, particularly his beloved grandchildren. His heart brimmed with warmth and connection, delivering laughter and a sense of belonging that enveloped all who gathered in his presence. Known as a jokester and a clown, Chonito's infectious humor illuminated every room, making him a friend to all and a stranger to none. His ability to cultivate relationships and bond with people from all walks of life was one of his most cherished attributes.
Chonito met the love of his life, Antonia, at Harrel’s, where she served at the soda fountain. In November of 1966 their love story blossomed, rooted in companionship and shared dreams. Together, they created a life full of memories, filled with laughter, music, and dance. Chonito cherished dancing with Antonia to their favorite tunes and looked forward to their time spent watching "Molly B." His love for the simple joys extended beyond the dance floor; he found peace in yard work and the pleasure of planting vegetables, nurturing life from the soil. Chonito's passion for baseball and western movies reflected his larger-than-life personality. He approached life with a cheerful spirit, possessing that rare ability to make even the simplest moments feel like grand adventures. His presence was magnetic, drawing people in with an energy that was uniquely his.
Chonito Silva exemplified hard work and dedication, not just as a provider for his family, but as a beacon of love and joy in their lives; he leaves behind a world enriched by his kindness and spirit. As we remember him, let us celebrate a man who embraced life with zest, offered humor as his gift, and fostered a deep sense of community through openness and friendship. Though his boots have taken their last steps, Chonito’s legacy will linger in the laughter of his grandchildren, in the stories shared around family gatherings, and in the lands he cherished – forever a cowboy at heart.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Encarnacion F. II., and Maria Luisa (Montalvo) Silva; and sister, Yolanda Cruz.
