Ellen Granny Shafer Suggs, 87, of Bishop, Texas, passed away on November 22, 2014, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Ellen Elois Shafer was born on September 1, 1927, in Pflugerville, Texas, one of eleven children born to Fred and Jessie Shafer.
The Shafer family moved when Ellen was six years old to Bishop where she later met and married the love of her life, James Lavern Suggs. Ellen was married to Vern for 68 years until his passing in 2012. They raised their family in Bishop and kept busy with Little League Games, Cub Scout Meetings, and their three sons football games. Ellen was a lifelong active member of the First Baptist Church of Bishop and past member of the Order of the Eastern Star. After retiring from the banking industry, Ellen also worked at the Kingsville Medical Clinic for several years. She was active in her community and also volunteered tirelessly for the Bishop Community Services Brown Bag Project. She loved working in her yard and craft shop in Bishop but especially enjoyed spending time with Vern at the Mathis Lake house and fishing with their large family. Granny will certainly be remembered by all her grandchildren for her special sugar cookie recipe.
Ellen is survived by her daughter, Beth Kartrude Tom of League City, Texas three sons, James Richard Suggs Patty of League City, Texas, Kenneth Noble Suggs Karen of Bishop, Texas, and Lawrence Miller Suggs Debbie of Portland, Texas one sister, Barbara Hubert Pat of San Leon, Texas nine grandchildren, eighteen greatgrandchildren, and three greatgreatgrandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 7, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Bishop with Rev. Clif Abshier officiating.
In lieu of flowers, Ellen wanted to be remembered by donations to the First Baptist Church of Bishop, 311 East 5th Street, Bishop, Texas 78343 or to the Bishop Community Services Brown Bag Project, P.O. Box 183, Bishop, Texas 78343.
Services are entrusted to TurcottePiper Mortuary, 205 General Cavazos Blvd., Kingsville, Texas.
