Our beloved Doris Faye Wright passed away suddenly on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at the tender age of 75. Doris was born August 14, 1946, in Alice, Texas to Clarence and Evelyn Dubose, and graduated from Alice High School in 1964. In 1963, she had her arm twisted to go on a double date with her sister when her own date “brought a friend along.” Her sister may not have found love that night, but Doris met “the friend” and that was that. That unexpected “third wheel” turned out to be the love of Doris’s life, Harry L. Wright III, and she married him on November 28, 1964, and liked him so well that they quickly went on to have four boys in five years.
Doris spent a good chunk of her life raising her boys, loving her husband, and inspiring the children of Ricardo ISD to a love of learning and literature, working first as a popular substitute teacher and then as the school’s librarian. After retirement and the loss of her beloved Harry, she changed career paths completely and became a cherished Grief Group Counselor, consoling others through unimaginable loss, drying their tears, and helping them to live again.
Doris was the heart and soul of her family. School functions, stock shows, sporting events, choir concerts, and especially Church and the Sacraments were her priorities. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren never had to wonder how Doris felt about them, all they had to do was look out into the crowd to see her smiling face beaming with her joyous love for them. She believed that childhood was for adventures, and a weekend at her house was sure to include BB guns, climbing trees, box houses, bedtime stories, and, of course, the infamous dirt pile. She may not have been a famous singer, but her rendition of “You Are My Sunshine” was the sweetest lullaby generations of Wright babies ever heard.
Doris was a faithful parishioner of St Gertrude Catholic Church in Kingsville, where she attended as many church functions, Friday night dinners hosted by the KC’s. and Sunday morning breakfasts with her post-Mass crew as her busy schedule would allow. When she wasn’t loving on her babies, Doris was known to enjoy a fierce game of Rummikub with her friends, and she dearly loved exercising with the women from her water aerobics class who had become more of a tight-knit sorority than merely being the ladies from the pool.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harry L. Wright, her parents Clarence and Evelyn Dubose, and her sister Shirley Greer, and her brother in-law Milton Neal. She is survived by her sister in-law Beverly Neal and four sons Demry (Paula) Wright of San Antonio, Texas, Matthew (Robin) Wright of New Braunfels, Texas, Patrick (Jill) Wright of Seguin, Texas, and Thomas (Brandi) Wright of Pipe Creek, Texas; Grandchildren, Kristin (Derrick) Burgess of Corpus Christi, Texas, Cody (Courtney) Wright of Corpus Christi, Texas, Kolton (Kenzie) Wright of Sinton, Texas, Zachary (Emily) Wright of Bozeman, Montana, Weston Wright of Lubbock, Texas, Tyler (Kaitlyn) Wright of Sequin, Texas, Macayla Wright of Victoria, Texas, Jake Wright and Landon Wright of Sequin, Texas; two step-grandchildren, Clay (Deserae) Burnett and Hailey Burnett of Boerne, Texas; great-grandchildren, Adlea Burgess, Kasen Burgess, Luke Wright, and Haysleigh Wright, her sisters, Joan (Vic) Owen of Dallas, Texas, Linda Lane of Utah, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive condolences on Monday, September 27, 2021, at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, 205 General Cavazos Blvd., from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM; with a holy rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM. A funeral procession will depart the funeral chapel at 9:30 AM, on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, to St. Gertrude Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM. A Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery, Goliad, TX.
