Charles Kalinec

Charles John Kalinec, age 83, a resident of Kingsville, Texas went to be with our Lord on Sunday, January 10, 2016. He was surrounded by his beloved family. Charles was born October 8, 1932 in Alice, Texas to Joe F. Kalinec Sr. and Frances Hlavac Kalinec. He graduated from William Adams High School in Alice, Texas in 1950. Later he attended St. Johns and the Assumption Seminaries where so many of his classmates went on to become Catholic Bishops. He returned back to farming in 1954 to help his ailing father on the farm. Charles then was drafted into the US Army and was stationed in Germany. He later served with the US Army Reserve. He was very active in the church as CCD coordinator, member of the choir, a lector, extraordinary minister serving during Mass and delivering communion to the homebound. Charles joined the Kingsville Police Dept. in 1968 and retired on February 29, 1996 and continued his services as Kingsville Police Reservist for years to follow. He was best known as "Officer Friendly" in Kingsville. He was a member of St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Kingsville. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 60 years, a member of KJT for over 75 years, past president of Local AARP, president and former board member of the Kingsville Community Federal Credit Union. As he continued his relationship with the Knights of Columbus, he was able to reach the level of 4th degree knight. Charlie held the title of District Deputy for the Knights of Columbus working with many state level officers.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two older brothers, Joe Jr. of Orange Grove, Texas and George of Alice; a sister-in-law, Brenda Kalinec of Alice; a godson, Paul J. Kalinec of San Antonio; and aunt, Betty Moos whom he loved as a mother.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Margie Truitt Kalinec; one son, Charles "Eddie" (Elizabeth) Kalinec of Premont, Texas; three daughters, Elizabeth "Missy" Kalinec of Spring, Texas, Patricia Kalinec of The Woodlands, Texas and Deborah (Rick) Zimmerman of The Woodlands; four brothers, Henry (Jane) Kalinec of San Antonio, Texas, Jerome (Johanna) Kalinec of Alice, Frank (Linda) Kalinec of Alice and Benjamin (Olene) Kalinec of Waller, Texas; two sisters, Fran (Don) Olson of Glendale, Oregon and Dorothy (Ron) Bertagna of Corpus Christi, Texas; grandchildren, Ryan and Emily Kalinec, both of Premont; numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his many godchildren, police brothers, KC brothers, his El Tapatio coffee buddies, The R.O.M.E.O.S. (Retired Old Men Eating Out). Special friends, J.F. and Bea Dick and Mae Elsik and especially Lee Durbin whom he considered a brother.
A visitation will be held Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. with a memorial rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. that evening at the Turcotte Piper Mortuary Chapel. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2016 at St. Gertrude Catholic Church, Kingsville, with Fr. James Stembler as celebrant. Immediately after the Mass, full military honors will take place outside of the church. Graveside service will be held at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi at a later date.
Services are entrusted to Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, 205 General Cavazos Blvd., Kingsville, Texas.
