Billy Ray Catchings

Billy Ray Catchings, a beloved family man and a cherished friend, passed away on January 31, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on September 8, 1941, Billy lived a life filled with love, laughter, and a strong sense of community.

A retired System Technician with AT&T, Billy dedicated 37 years to his career, earning respect and admiration among his colleagues. His steadfast nature and commitment to his work mirrored his approach to life—always direct, never sugarcoating his thoughts. A true jokester at heart, Billy brought humor into every situation, reminding those around him of the joy that could be found in even the smallest moments.

Billy was particularly passionate about spending time with his family, with his precious grandchildren holding a special place in his heart. He often reminisced about a magical Christmas when it snowed in South Texas, a cherished memory that he painted vividly with stories of togetherness alongside his loving wife and family.

An avid outdoorsman, Billy found great pleasure in deer, duck, and geese hunting, always accompanied by his loyal labradors. Fishing also provided him moments of tranquility, allowing him to connect with nature and reflect on life’s blessings. His interests extended into his home, where the daily rituals of watching "General Hospital" and keeping up with the local news and weather became sacred times—everyone knew to keep their calls and visits at bay during those cherished hours.

Billy's fervent support for local sports teams was well-known, proudly rooting for Texas A&M Javelinas, Houston Astros, Houston Texans, Texas Longhorns, and serving as a dedicated member of the Riviera Seahawks Booster group. His enthusiastic participation in the annual Riviera Seahawk Booster Fundraiser showcased his commitment to community and philanthropy, an event he looked forward to with great anticipation each year.

His passing leaves a profound void in the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He will be remembered not just for his humor and affection but also for his unwavering principles and dedication to both family and community.

Billy is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Eliza Catchings; parents, Andy Clarence and Aline Elizabeth (Smith) Catchings; and siblings, Sonny Catchings and Kathy Clifton.

Among those left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Paulette Catchings; children, Lorie (Scott) Knippa, Bubba (Melba) Catchings, and Christy (Ruben) Soliz; grandchildren, Clete Knippa and Callie Knippa, Brandon Archer, Katrina Catchings and Austin Catchings, Elizabeth Soliz and Madison Soliz; great-grandsons, Victor Work and Jayden Wright; sister, Carolyn Cox; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
