Beverly Curtis Jones died on January 2, 2015, at her home in Kingsville, Texas. She was born June 9, 1928, in Paris, France. She married Herman Jones in 1946 and had four children: Allan, Rick, Wendell, and Jan. In Brownsville, Texas, she helped manage the family's dairy farm and began a career in education. In 1958, she and her family moved to Kingsville where she earned a master's degree in education from Texas A&I. She was a first grade teacher before she became a faculty member at Texas A&I University, where she taught classes including educational psychology for three decades.
Beverly's live-long love of education was only exceeded by her love for her children and her extended family, which includes Stanley and Vivian Bittinger. She received numerous awards during her time as a professor at Texas A&I, including earning tenure and serving as President of the Faculty Senate. Throughout her life, Beverly travelled extensively, both in the United States and abroad. She loved nature and adventure, and she visited many national parks and other points of interest across the U.S. Beverly's travels outside the U.S. included visits to every continent except Antarctica.
She is remembered by her family and friends as a brilliant conversationalist and thoughtful person who always was interested in what they were doing. Beverly's broad knowledge and wisdom were an inspiration to her children, grandchildren, extended family, and all who knew her. Several of Beverly's children and grandchildren have chosen careers serving in education as she did. Beverly is survived by her four children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Allen Jones and Kelsey Menzel live in San Antonio, Texas; Rick Jones and Mike Berry live in Austin, Texas; Wendell Jones and Marston James live in West Hollywood, California; and Jan (Jones) Burchfield and Mitchel Burchfield live in Uvalde, Texas. The memorial service, officiated by Dr. Stanley Bittinger, will be held at 1:30 p.m. at The Church of the Brethren in Falfurrias, Texas, on Saturday, January 10, 2015. The family wishes to express their appreciation and gratitude to family friend Eva Vera for her support and help over the years, and to Cindy Diaz, who acted as a companion and helper to Beverly in the last year of her life.
Memorials may be made to The Church of the Brethren, P.O. Box 205, Falfurrias, Texas 78355.
Services are entrusted to Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, 205 General Cavazos Blvd., Kingsville, Texas.
