Benjamin Glusing

Benjamin Glusing, 100, passed away in his home in Kingsville on May 3, 2016. Glusing was born in Redfield, Kan. on Feb. 3, 1916 to Rudolph and Katherine Glusing.
Glusing graduated from Washburn College in Topeka, Kan. with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1937. He moved to Corpus Christi in 1937, where he worked for radio station KRIS as an on-air broadcaster. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in March of 1941, and was serving with a military police unit in Brownwood, Texas, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He served in the Pacific Theater during the war and was discharged in 1946 in Washington D.C. He completed law school at Georgetown University in 1948 and moved to Kingsville.
He began practicing law under Kleberg County Attorney Jack Kidd and later had a law partnership with local attorney Nelson Sharpe. Shortly after his arrival in Kingsville, Glusing began doing work as a lawyer for King Ranch, and he continued that work for more than 25 years.
Glusing served for 10 years, from 1953 to 1962, as a representative in the Texas Legislature, representing Nueces, Kleberg and Kenedy counties.
He married Nell Buchanan Jack on Jan. 19, 1956 and the couple lived in Kingsville until Nell's death in 1978.
Glusing served on the board of the State Bank of Texas for more than 50 years, was a member of the Kingsville Noon Rotary Club for 67 years, held a variety of lay positions in the Church of the Epiphany in Kingsville and was active in the Boy Scouts of America.
Glusing was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and siblings, Mary Glusing-Elliot Botsford, John Edward Glusing and James John Glusing.
He is survived by one son, James Jack "Jim" Glusing; two step-daughters, Sarah Nell "Sally" Foster and Josephine Ann "Jody" Foster; grandchildren Laura Lynn Traylor Gunn, William Benjamin Traylor, Kristine Traylor, Johnathan Leslie Gorman, and Benjamin Nathaniel Updike; and two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Charlesworth and Addison Blackwelder.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 6 at 2 p.m. at Epiphany Episcopal Church, located at 206 N. Third St. in Kingsville. A reception will follow at the church immediately after the funeral ceremony. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Frank H. Dotterweich and June Smith Dotterweich Memorial Trust.
