On August 9th, 2022, our beloved Adelfa (Avie) Vela Tamez earned her wings as she joined the choirs of angels with our Lord at the age of 95 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 27, 1926, in Kingsville to Ecliserio and Juanita Vela. She was the widow of Francisco O. Tamez, and is survived by her 4 children, Homer (Ina) Tamez, Diane (Cruz) Hernandez, David (Delma) Tamez, and Delma (Joe) Garza. A lifelong resident of Kingsville, TX, Adelfa dedicated her life to caring for children at 1st Presbyterian Church, 1st Baptist Church, Central Baptist Church and later operated her own daycare from her home. Her passions included working on her flower beds that created a beautiful path to her front door where all were welcome. With her limited income she always managed to support veteran organizations such as DAV, PAV, VFW, and WW. She was very proud of her husband, brother, two sons, and three grandsons that were all war vets. An especially loving grandmother, “Nana'' made sure her 9 grandchildren never went without. They include Melanie Avie Boullion, James H. Tamez, Gina N. Tamez, Michael F. Tamez, Michelle Ybanez, Matthew Tamez, David J. Chapa, Brian Chapa, Adrian J. Garza, Laura Guzman, and Joe Garza III. Her 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Rosa Moya of Corpus Christi, Tx, Inez Prado of Morgan Hill, CA, Olga Mata of Kingsville, Tx, and numerous nieces and nephews all knew her love.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Francisco O. Tamez; brothers, Ricardo Vela, Benito Rodriguez, Ecliserio Vela; and sister, Julia Molina.
The family expresses their gratitude to WellMed doctors, Carolyn Franklin MD and Elizabeth Garza PA, and Dr. Ugarte of Serenity and Grace Hospice. The family expresses gratitude to numerous neighbors, friends, and extended family who were too numerous to mention for their continued support and gratitude.
The family will receive condolences on Friday, August 12, 2022, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a rosary at 7:00 PM. A funeral mass will be on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church officiated by Father Paulson Panakal. Burial to follow at Santa Gertrudis Cemetery also officiated by Father Paulson Panakal.
